Tim Metcalf, dean of visual arts in school of art of University of Southampton, visited International College on 19th November, giving specialized guidance for the students in art design.

On the morning of 19th, Tim held a workshop on image design for the broadcasting station. He required the students to design the publicity posters for three virtual broadcasting programs, through which he would like to train them the visual communication skill. In the workshop, the students experienced the class mode in University of Southampton.

After work, Tim Metcalf visited the works exhibition of the 2009 students in the 3rd floor of the library in Zhangzhou campus. Tim Metcalf gave comments on each of the students’ works, ranging from their creativity, color to tools. He wrote down ‘Excellent Works’ on the message board to compliment and encourage the students.

In the afternoon, Tim elaborated his opinions on students’ works collection and questions the students may be asked in their interviews. First, he pointed out the problems need to be paid attention in preparing the works collection, including size, page, printing quality and so on. Students have to make sure their works collections are clear, beautiful and tidy. He showed the students the collection of his works. Besides that, about the interview questions, he told the students the most important was to be honest and positive. Students need to learn to think out of the box, for example what exact the work is. It is better for them to explain the source of creativity to the interviewer. He thought creativity and sensitivity were more important than skills. He was impressed with the students of arts during his lecture.

Two sessions of students have been sent to University of Southampton since 2008. The 2008 students have finished their courses and graduated.
