Introduction: Chen Liangyu, graduated from Hui’an Senior High School, studied financial service in foundation to master programat the International College of Xiamen University in 2007; studied international business management at Middlesex University for senior year of bachelor’s degree; obtained first-class honors undergraduate degree from Middlesex University and successfully applied for courses of master of international business management at University of Birmingham in 2011; currently studying at University of Birmingham for master’s degree.

Q: Why did you choose the International College of Xiamen University after graduating from high school?

A:The main reason that I chose the International College was its humane curriculum design and the corresponding overseas study program. In three-year English study, we used original learning materials from the UK. Good teachers also had laid the foundation for my overseas education. The traditional English culture and customs course in particular was very helpful for us to blend in with the local English life. Additionally, the beautiful campus, improved facilities and rich learning environment are also the main reasons.

Q:During the three-year’s study, what was helpful for your overseas education?

A: It proved that my choice was right. Courses that I learned as a financial service major laid a firm foundation for my overseas study, such as investment, finance and communication skills. The English classes I had in those three years also improved my language a lot.

Q: How is your study in the UK now?

A: I’m studying international business management – finance at Middlesex University in London. This major includes courses regarding international business management and financial management. Two teaching methods are adopted: lecture and seminar. Guided by these two methods, I was awarded the first-class honours undergraduate degree. After graduation, I successfully applied for master’s courses of international business management at University of Birmingham.

Q: Why did you choose University of Birmingham for your master’s degree?

A: TheUniversity of Birmingham is a quite well-known institute whose business school is the earliest in the UK and one of world top 100. The reason that I chose it was mainly because its achievement on business education. My study at University of Birmingham is busy and fulfilling. My major involves management theories, finance, accounting and human resources. These courses have broadened my knowledge on every single step of a business activity. Outside of the class, the university will organize dinner party, outdoor practice and entertainment activities to relieve our stress, tighten the bond between us students and promote cultural communication.

Q: What achievements have you got from overseas study?

A: Studying abroad has broadened my knowledge and expand my horizons. I thing studying overseas is a process that toughens you. In a country which has almost completely different culture and lifestyle, you have to rely on yourself to observe, feel and adjust. Only through this can you blend in with the local life and learning environment. I’ve been improved in many aspects. Rigorous English have taught me to do things carefully and pay attention to details. In the meantime, in this multi-cultural country, I’ve learnt to see a thing from different angles and understand different voices.
